Sometimes, We Write Stuff...

Status Report - Summer 2008

I know it's been a moment since my last post, so I just wanted to give everyone a quick update.  I promise I haven't abandoned this blog – I've just been seriously overloaded with work!  Things are (thankfully) approaching a more normal pace over here, though... and I have a few partially-written articles that I'm looking forward to sharing with everyone very soon!

In the meanwhile, for those of you who have been following my 'mootools content slider' stuff:  Definitely check out the comments for each of the entries!  There's a lot of nice folks that have come by and shared their revisions/ideas, including a class-based version of the initial slider I made.  (Thanks, Nulll!)

Also, I just want to get a tiny rant off my chest:   I think Cuil  – the search engine that mainstream media is pushing so heavily this week – totally blows!  Here's my two cents on Cuil:

  • I don't care if it's created by former Google developers, the fact of the matter is that it produces a lot of half-assed/irrelevant search results.  Give it a try with a few searches, and you'll likely come to the same conclusion as me.  (What is the algorithm used, blindfolded chimps and a dartboard?)
  • Besides producing skimpy/irrelevant results, the ones returned are a total mess on screen.  Why the odd/uneven columns and random results with screenshots?  (And why can't I change any of that?)
  • It's a small gripe... but why have a black initial screen, and then results shown on a white page?  It almost feels like you go to a different site... and that's bad for usability, IMHO.
  • Finally, I think the name is seriously goofy.  We get it, you're trying to be technologically hip by using a one-syllable non-existant word that sounds like 'cool' – but you failed.  I'll stick to googling... go Cuil yourself and your silly search engine.  *grin*

Ahhh... that felt good!  I won't normally rant in public like this, but with all the hype surrounding Cuil I felt a strong need to tell the truth – and not what someone's marketing dollar wants me to say.

Anyhow, stay tuned for more on-topic posts soon... and thanks for reading!
